- HOW TO DEAL WITH MISSING HOME
- Being homesick is a natural,
healthy emotion that many your adults have experienced from time
to time. They need to know they have your support as they cope
with their feelings: Help them to undertsnad and trust that those
feelings will pass as they get involved in homestay life.
- Reassure your young adult
son / daughter thta it's likely and also OK to miss home at some
point.
- Resure your son / daughter
that he or she will be missed.
- Explain what homesick feels
like. (They could feel lonely, or like you have a stomach ache.)
- Encourage your son / daughter
not to withdraw from what's happening when he or she is feeling
down, but rather to join in and be part of daily activities.
- Discuss ehat steps can be
taken when feeling homesick. (Talk to the ESL teacher, seek out
a friend, write a letter to mom and dad.)
- Pack a family photo or other
small favourite possessions along with your son/daugther.
- Write to your son/daughter
at homestay.
