- HOW TO PREPARE A FIRST-TIMER
-
- Going on a homestay trip for
the first time should be celebrated by you and your son/daughter,
not feared. It's an exciting time where young adults will get
to explore new interests, build new skills, make friends and
learn from from caring teachers. But anythingnew may require
some getting used to. Here are some ways to ease your son/daughter
into homestay:
- Help young adults understand
what's involved, discuss the activities they will likely participate
in. Go to the GOOGLE and check out what one would expect to see
and do in Toronto.
- Share memories and stories
from your first away from home or when you spent time away from
home doing something special.
- Talk about the fun things
and adventures awaiting your child.
- Help your son/daughter have
realistic expectations; as in their daily lives at home, not
every moment will be action-packed and there will be ups and
downs.
- Few Tips on Helping your
Son/Daughter Prepare
- Sleep over at a friend's place
is a good practice for homestay.
- Encourage independence (making
the bed, tidying up the room, etc.)
- Explain what to do with dirty
laundry or wet bathing suits.
- Prepare them for bedtime away
from home: encourage them to bring along a favourite stuffed
toy or book to help them get to sleep.
